What are the benefits of
massage? Massage
increases the circulation of the blood and lymph systems,
thus carrying off harmful metabolic waste by-products that
may accumulate in the cells of the muscle tissue due to
overwork or from tension and fatigue. Increased nutrition
and oxygen from the blood assist healing processes and
heighten the body's overall vitality. some additional
benefits include:
- alleviating pain in sore muscles
- releasing tensions in the body brought about
by psychological stress
- lowering of blood pressure
- tonification of the skin and muscle tissue
- increased flexibility
- stimulation of nerve supply to virtually
every cell and organ in the body
What will my
massage session be like? The session
will take place in a room specially designed to provide a
safe, nurturing environment. It will begin with a brief
consultation with your therapist to gather health and
general information. The
therapist will leave the room for a few minutes to allow you
to disrobe and make yourself comfortable on the table which
is specifically designed for massage. Communication is vital to effective massage
therapy. During your session, you should feel free to ask
questions and offer feedback. After the massage, your
therapist will leave the room, allowing your to relax and
redress.
Do I
have to disrobe
completely? For a full
body massage, most people undress completely. This allows
the therapist to work without having the massage strokes
shortened by waistbands or bra straps. However, it is your
massage, so undress only to your comfort level. For your
warmth and modesty, you will be draped at all times. Only
the area being worked on will be
uncovered.
What kind of
training do massage therapist
have? The
state of Texas requires massage therapist to complete 300
classroom hours in various massage techniques, anatomy, and
physiology. After completion of the class hours and an
internship period, massage therapists must also pass a state
board exam. Additionally, the therapists at Lakeshore
Massage Therapy continue to take classes in advanced
modalities.
How
can I expect massage to make me
feel? The most
common effect felt after massage is relaxation. This is
often followed by a feeling of rejuvenation. You may notice
increased mobility and flexibility and a general sense of
well-being. After deep-tissue massage and trigger point
therapy, you may notice localized soreness. This is normal.
You may also experience some temporary flu-like symptoms or
headache cased by the body's release of toxins from the
muscles. This is why it is essential to drink large
quantities of water for the 24 hours following your massage
to flush these toxins from your system. You may also feel emotional after or during
your massage. When muscle tension is released, emotions may
be released as well. This is a perfectly normal reaction,
and your therapist is prepared to support
you.
Is
massage always
appropriate? Massage
is inadvisable for some conditions. It is important for you
to inform your massage therapist of any medical conditions,
injuries or allergies you may have. In some cases, your
massage therapist may ask to contact your physician to
ensure that massage therapy is suitable.
Is
massage ever
prescribed? Yes. Doctors
and chiropractors frequently prescribe massage treatments.
In some cases, insurance covers the cost of massage therapy.
Please consult your policy and/or your prescribing
physician.
